acupuncture.

defined

An ancient Asian healing technique, based on the Taoist philosophy of balancing energy meridians within the body.  Fine needles are painlessly inserted at key points corresponding to body organs to relieve pain and improve body function.

the theory

An energy force, known as Qi (pronounced chee), flows throughout the body.  If the flow of Qi is insufficient, the body becomes unbalanced and disease may occur.

Qi travels throughout the body along pathways called ‘meridians’.  Acupuncture points are specific locations where meridians come to the surface of the skin.  Acupuncture needles are gently inserted at these points to restore balance within the body.

cupping

Cupping is the stimulation of acupuncture points by applying suction through small cups to increase circulation to the site.

ear seeds

Ear acupuncture points may be stimulated for a longer period of time by using an ear seed.  Ear seeds may be left on the ear for a few days up to one week.

herbology

Herbology is the ancient practice of utilization of the healing properties of plants.  The Acupuncturist may recommend an herbal formula tailored to the individual.

what to expect

Initial sessions usually last one hour.  Regular sessions last 30 to 40 minutes.  Though the insertion of needles might not sound appealing, the reality is that the fine needles cause little discomfort if any at all.  Once the needles are inserted, most people find this experience to be quite relaxing and some may even fall asleep.
